This scene in the Xmas special hit hard, it’s the amazing thing about Smith and Moffat — his deliver of the lines that break your heart. And it is speaking directly to one of the themes running through 11 but it’s also more than a bit frustrating as the season finale made the time line so knotty and the Doctor’s actions more random than they seemed to be through foreshadowing and those tantalizing empty gaps that we thought would be filled in. Perhaps they still will.

But the heartbreak moments, those are still powerful and true.
